Tahiti is the most famous of the islands of Polynesia. It was made famous by the painter Van Gough, the Mutiny on the Bounty films and tourists who visited and had dream vacations.

A vacation in French Polynesia can be very expensive unless you do your homework and find packages deals. You can also opt to stay in hostels or locally operated villas and hotels. On Moorea you can even camp out. Club Med operates on Bora Bora and Moorea and have all-inclusive packages. There are many all-inclusive hotel packages available that fit the single traveler's budget.

You can also island hop and visit several of the islands of Tahiti by purchasing an air Tahiti 28 day air pass that allows you to travel by air to 46 islands and atolls in French Polynesia. The cost of this pass is about $400.00 US. The only inter-island boat transport which is feasible is between Moorea and Tahiti for about $10.00. You can catch a boat to the other islands such as Bora Bora from Papeete but it is a rough trip.

Transportation on Tahiti is available via the rental of a car which is pretty expensive at about $100.00 per day. You do, however, have options. You can rent an open jeep-like vehicle, you can take an excursion tour or you can ride le Truck which is the local bus transportation. When we were in Papeete my wife and I rode le Truck with the local people who did not speak English and we did not speak Tahitian or French. We did reach our destination which everyone on le Truck seemed to know which stop was ours. It was a great experience talking to the local people through a young lady passenger who spoke English and had seen us in her church on Moorea that past Sunday.

There are safari tours available in four wheel drive vehicles on all the main islands. You can also tour the islands in outrigger canoes.

Because of it's distance Tahiti is not a high volume tourist destination. Only about 200,000 tourist visit each year. So go anytime and you will not have a tourist crush and you will have the time of your life on these gorgeous islands.
